Should I worry with Pool Water Chemistry?

Pool Service Crossville Tennessee

With swim season fast approaching, many people ask “Should I worry with Pool Water Chemistry”? Many home owners simply think that buying some chlorine at Walmart and throwing it into the pool solves the issue. However a closer look reveals that more is needed.

Simple fact is that water contains bacteria and viruses. Bad things are in water, Ben Franklin once said “In beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria”. Germs like crypto, E. coli, and giardia are spread in pools where water chemistry is unbalanced. Symptoms of all three illnesses include diarrhea, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and stomach cramps. Swimmers ear is directly related to bacteria being in the pool water which in turn cause infection. So the need to understand and be aware of water chemistry is a very legitimate concern to create a healthy environment for your families recreation.

Chlorine is by far the most used oxidizer and sanitizing agent found in swimming pools. Chlorine has been in use for over 100 years and is very fast acting. Chlorine is safe when used properly. It is effective in low doses, however there are many more factors playing into the effectiveness. You have to take into effect things like PH of the water, alkalinity, temperature, Calcium level, Free Available Chlorine, Combined Chlorine, and even more. Chlorine is effective and is recommended by CDC to properly treat recreational swimming water, but just adding Chlorine alone is not going to maintain clean, healthy, and clear water. Superior Pool Service is trained and continues to attend educational classes on the best, most updated methods of Pool Water Chemistry.

Biguanides, or Baquacil, is a popular product in our area of Crossville, Tennessee. Being a Certified Pool Operator, I just began learning of Biguanides once in this area. This form of sanitation is not used or taught in the commercial pool industry. CDC doesn’t really have much to say on it. From my research, there is strong opinions on both sides as to whether Biguanides are effective in maintaining healthy water. Do your research, just because a sales representative tells you it is “Chlorine Free” and won’t bleach your swimsuit, does NOT mean it is chemical free. Also, what about the bacteria or germs it does not completely eliminate in the water? However, if you prefer the Biguanide system, be aware it is a 3 step system. You will need the Sanitizer, Oxidizer, and Algaecide and this will need weekly attention to maintain healthy water.

Filter maintenance is VERY important to overall water health in your swimming pool. Proper water circulation is vital also.

Everyone of us enjoy time spent by the pool, nice bbq in the evening with friends, and we want to enjoy this time to the full!
